doubtfactorThere’s a cool story in the Bible (Mark 9 for those who are page turners) where Jesus meets a man who’s son has been possessed by a demon since birth. It causes the boy to threw himself  into a convulsions, fall to the ground, roll around, gnash his teeth, becomes rigid, foams at the mouth, and has tossed himself into fire or water to kill the boy.  Wow! And you think you have issues.

Anyway, this desperate Father comes to the disciples of Jesus to get help but they could not get rid of this horrible evil spirit. (Yes there are such things as demons but that’s for another article.) The man says to Jesus “if you can do anything, take pity on us and help us.” Then Jesus says the classic line:

“‘If you can’?” said Jesus. “Everything is possible for one who believes

This sounds easy enough – just believe and everything works our fine. But remember where this Father is coming from. He has watched his son be tormented since birth and he’s broken and worn out. We’ve all been there at one time ourselves. And in his desperation he reaches out to GOD for help, but really is not sure that GOD will do anything. Sound familiar?

I like what this father says next: “I do believe; help me overcome my unbelief!”

I feel that way myself often when things don’t go the way I expected. I still have times of doubt despite the miracles I’ve seen GOD do in my life. I mean real miracles! Like the time we were literally out of money and GOD had someone give me $10,000 cash one night as a gift! That person had no idea of my financial situation but was led by GOD to give it to me as a gift – not a loan – a gift. I have seen GOD carry me through the horrible days of a divorce, custody battles, financial ruin, and so much more. During these time of struggle I had just enough faith to trust Him one more day. One day at a time.

The man in this story wanted to believe but his circumstances seemed too big for Jesus to really do anything to change them. BUT, GOD IS ABLE TO DO EVERYTHING IF WE BELIEVE.

This starts with believing in GOD and his son Jesus Christ. Once we give up our lives to follow His will, He gives us the Holy Spirit of GOD to be with us always and to develop our faith as we walk with Him through life. My faith grows more each time I use it. Like a muscle does when we workout. The more times GOD gives me a chance to trust Him completely, the bigger my faith gets, and the easier it is to trust more when the next crisis comes up.

You may believe, just not very much, and that’s okay. Start where you are and grow because “He who began a good work in you will complete it.”  We are not done until we stand in heaven before GOD so the journey rolls on with many more chances to strengthen our Faith muscles. Remember also that GOD intended that we support each other in the process. The Body of Christ, aka the church, you and me, are meant to walk in unity so we carry each others burdens.
