Lee Herrin heads up the prayer team for our DFW Technology Prayer Breakfast and has one of the most important jobs on the team. Yesterday he sent out a verse as part of our 40 Days of Prayer that directed us to Matthew 6:33 –

But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.

This led me to think about “these things” Jesus was talking about when he commanded us (not suggested) to seek first the kingdom & righteousness of GOD.

Our Father in Heaven knows what His children (you and me) need. Jesus reminds us that we should not worry about our lives and the details but instead focus on what GOD cares about, how HE wants us to behave, and then GOD will give us what he wants us to have. (see the entire section of scripture below)

He reminds us that the flowers of field don’t plan or do anything to successfully grow, and if GOD takes care of something as simple as that, how much more will he take care of us – “oh we of little faith.”

tantrum-face

We have a loving Father who knows what is best for His kids. My kids would often complain about what they did not have instead of being thankful for what they DID have. I used to look at them and see how misguided their complaints were or even an occasional tirade when they did not get what they wanted (ask me about the time I would not buy Lauren a Barbie at the grocery store).

The reality is that I behave this way myself far too often. When my business is not growing as fast as I think it should (“My ways are not your ways”) or when GOD doesn’t fix the challenges as quickly as I think he should (“My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.”) I have my own little tantrum going on between me and GOD, and He is not impressed.

Jesus directs me to focus on being what matters most to GOD and to walk in obedience to His word. In response to that life-long journey of obedience GOD will give me what I need, and even a lot of what I want because He is a loving Father who rejoices in His children.

We Are Not Flowers

worry2Yeah I get it, it’s different in your situation and we are not simple flowers. We have kids and mortgages and health issues and marital problems and the IRS and, and, and, and…

God is not ignorant to your needs. He just knows that in the eternal scheme of a GOD who has no beginning or end, all the things you face are but a spec in time compared to all He has seen in the world, and GOD is still bigger than ALL you face.

It’s all about your focus. God still expects us to work hard and take care of what he has seen fit to make us responsible for,  we need to stay focused on the fact that GOD is still in control so keep your eyes on Him. Stay focused on honoring GOD in all you have and do, and then He will take care of the rest. He always has.

Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.

That sounds good but sometimes I DO worry and I need the support of others to help me process through it all. That is one of the reasons we have the DFW Technology Prayer Breakfast. Our Mission is to create a relevant business environment  for Technology Professionals in DFW where a life-changing relationship with Jesus Christ is presented and nurtured. We’re starting by building a community around our annual Prayer Breakfast and desire that this grow to be a safe place to find encouragement all year long. Join us and find a place where you can be real as we all walk this journey together.

Matthew 28 – 34   “And why do you worry about clothes? See how the flowers of the field grow. They do not labor or spin. 29 Yet I tell you that not even Solomon in all his splendor was dressed like one of these. 30 If that is how God clothes the grass of the field, which is here today and tomorrow is thrown into the fire, will he not much more clothe you—you of little faith? 31 So do not worry, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’ 32 For the pagans run after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them. 33 But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well. 34 Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.
